Contrast this history with the artistic bilge emanating from Neil Young, fantastically covered by Grace Potter and Joe Satriani. So much artistic beauty, so little historical truth

The line "Hate was just a legend / And war was never known" definitely couldn't be further from the truth 😂

Enjoying Neil Young makes me feel like one of the Shakespeare-quoting Klingons in Star Trek 6.

This is incredible. Just found this. thanks for sharing. I'm from El Salvador, so all the stuff about my ancestors hits heavy. I am so, so thankful the Lord sent the Europeans to rescue us.

I read Cervantes’ Conquistadors early this year and enjoyed it. Would like for him to have expanded a bit in his final chapter why it is 19th century ideologies are to blame for Latin American troubles, rather than Spanish conquest.

It's a fascinating topic — we touched on this a bit both in the interview, and behind the scenes at lunch once the cameras stopped rolling. Dr. Cervantes provides some excellent rebuttals to the commonly held "knowledge"

Thank you for your reply. Do you know whether he intends to write about this is the future? He and Felipe Fernandez Armesto would make a great duo for a lecture series on these topics.

And I can’t even learn Spanish

You should read the Conquest of New Spain by Bernal Diaz!

Dr. Cervantes cites Diaz quite often in his work, he provides an excellent eyewitness account

Great story, I will be sure to watch the interview!

Great article. I do not know much about the Conquistadors and found this fascinating. Thanks

I am watching the interview, the video, and wondering why it is not posted on YouTube. There I can I can get CC subtitles that are very useful.

Evan Amato's avatar

Hey Elizabeth, CC is available here on Substack as well — are you watching on desktop?

Elizabeth Hamilton's avatar

No, my desktop is broken. I’ve only got my phone. Thanks for your reply.

By the way, excellent interview. I haven't felt as excited and intrigued since I read the beginning of Les mots et Les choses 50 years ago.

Obedezco pero no cumplo, fascinating.

Keep the faith in captivity through fidelity to the "wife". Duly Noted!
