Thank you dear Shelli! Vicenza is honestly a dream, come rain or shine. I actually visited the week before all Hell was let loose in Veneto in February 2020. There was a strange, ethereal mist across the mainland then, and the Palladian villas rising from it were a truly enchanting sight!
I keep hearing that about Vicenza. Last spring a friend in Venice took me to see Villa Emo and Villa Barbaro but we didn’t make it over to Vicenza. Next time, I hope . . .
Patronage comes from Latin patronus, 'protector', from pater, 'father'. The Accademia Olimpica turned the model sideways. Citizens protecting culture rather than waiting for a great man to do it for them.
And thus indeed becoming great men themselves! Trissino could scarcely have dreamed of the second order effects of all he did. Even just his making of Palladio changed the West forever!
Bravo -- another great piece, James. Thanks to you, I've added yet another place to my must-see list!
