Imagine stepping into a world unlike anything you’ve ever known. A land where the customs, language, and power dynamics are utterly foreign.
Now imagine that in this alien environment, your survival and success depends on winning the trust of the most powerful ruler in the world. For Marco Polo, this wasn’t a hypothetical challenge — it was his reality.
In 1275, the young Venetian merchant found himself at the court of Kublai Khan, ruler of the Mongol Empire and founder of the Chinese Yuan dynasty. But in a situation where most would feel far out of their depth, Polo thrived and became one of the Khan’s most trusted emissaries.
So how did he do it? Today, we explore the remarkable story of Marco Polo, and what he can teach you about how to excel in foreign and unfamiliar environments…
Navigating the Unknown
Marco Polo’s journey to the court of Kublai Khan was nothing short of extraordinary. It began with a grueling trek along the Silk Road, crossing deserts, mountains, and war-torn lands — in many ways, the complete antithesis of his native Venice. By the time he reached the Khan’s palace in Shangdu, Polo was immersed in a world unlike anything he ever imagined.
The Mongol court was vast and imposing, filled with rituals and customs he had never encountered. Kublai Khan’s palace itself was a marvel, and the scale of his empire was staggering — it stretched from the heart of China to the fringes of Europe, encompassing dozens of languages and cultures.
For Polo, this was no place for hesitation. He had to adapt — and quickly. He observed, listened, and learned the customs of this foreign court. If he wanted to succeed, he first had to understand the nature of the field he’d be playing on.
Standing Out (In the right way)
Kublai Khan didn’t need another sycophant in his court. He needed real talent, someone who could help him advance his diplomatic agenda — and this is where Polo set himself apart.
Unlike the Mongols or their Chinese advisors, Polo brought to the table a deep knowledge of Europe, a world Kublai Khan sought to understand. He leveraged his background to become a bridge between East and West, sharing insights into trade, politics, and culture that no one else could offer.
But Polo didn’t just talk, he acted. For the next 17 years he served the Khan by traveling across the empire as an emissary. His experience navigating different cultures made him an invaluable asset, and he was recognized as one of the Khan’s most effective diplomats.
In short, Polo recognized what made him unique — and he leaned into it. He made what could have been a liability (his radically different background) into an asset, and leveraged it to stand out from the others.
Becoming Indispensable
But while Polo’s unique experience opened the door to him, it was his consistency and professionalism that made him indispensable. Despite his missions involving dangerous and politically delicate tasks, Polo consistently exceeded expectations.
On one assignment, Polo traveled to a remote and volatile province in southwestern China called Yunnan to gather intelligence for the Khan. His detailed reports on the region’s resources, geography, and governance were instrumental in helping the Mongols maintain control over their newly annexed territories.
Polo also took care to notice what the Khan actually valued and looked for in his officials. As one commentary writer puts it:
Mark, during his stay at court, had observed the Kaan’s delight in hearing of strange countries, their marvels, manners, and oddities, and had heard his Majesty’s frank expressions of disgust at the stupidity of his commissioners when they could speak of nothing but the official business on which they had been sent.
Profiting by these observations, he took care to store his memory or his note-books with all curious facts that were likely to interest Kúblái, and related them with vivacity on his return to Court.
Polo’s diligence and attention to detail earned him the Khan’s trust, respect, and affection. The quality of his reports and his diplomatic tact rendered him invaluable to the leader. Soon enough, Polo’s reputation began to precede him on his missions throughout the empire — he had become indispensable.
Takeaways
1) Get Comfortable with the Unknown
When Marco Polo arrived in the Khan’s court, he couldn’t have been more out of his element. But by being intentional in how he observed those around him, he slowly began to acclimate.
When faced with the unfamiliar, approach it with curiosity and humility. Bide your time as you gain a lay of the land and come to understand your environment. And as you do so, be sure to keep an eye out for the unique opportunities it presents you…
2) Embrace What Makes You Unique
Being a foreigner could have disqualified Polo from a job in government. But he instead framed it in a way that helped him land the job.
Likewise, you can turn potential liabilities into assets by leaning into what makes you different. Don’t try to play the same game everyone else is playing — rather, use what makes you different to offer value that no one else can provide.
3) Build Trust Through Consistency
Marco Polo didn’t build his reputation overnight. He built it over the course of a decade, understanding that he’d have to prove himself time and time again before fully winning the Khans trust.
Reliability is the cornerstone of trust. Show up, deliver, and let your actions build your reputation. Pay attention to detail and note what people appreciate most — then leverage this diligence to consistently stand out and build others’ faith in you.
